Higher Education Commission of India: Government has set up a committee to merge UGC and AICTE. Notably, a joint body for higher education is to be set up in the country – the Higher Education Commission of India, HECI. It was proposed for the first time in 2018, and was also suggested in the National Education Policy 2020.
Now the government has formed a committee to prepare a plan for the merger of UGC and AICTE. Under this, the research, administration, examination reform and other areas of both the institutes will be merged. Till now, AICTE for technical colleges and UGC for non-technical colleges used to supervise the work in various fields.
Apart from this, the government may introduce a bill in the winter session of Parliament regarding the establishment of HECI. HECI will be a composite body for higher education, in which all regulatory bodies like AICTE, UGC and NCTE will be merged.
