Big news for PG medical students, stipend will be available even during this vacation

PG medical students get stipend: The Post Graduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) of National Medical Commission (NMC) recently clarified that PG medical students should be given stipend for extended training period during maternity leave. NMC informed in its latest notification that “PG female students on maternity leave will be given stipend for extended training period”.

“According to Section 13.3 of PGMEB, 2000, the matter of grant of leave to PG students shall be governed by the rules of the concerned State Government. In July 2021, NMC’s draft rules for compulsory rotation internships proposed that medical colleges, universities can decide the stipend to be paid to MBBS interns.

Last year’s performance
Last year, several students, including MBBS interns from Bihar, Nagpur, Telangana, Osmania Medical Colleges protested to demand an increase in their monthly stipend. The Bihar intern demanded the authorities to increase the stipend from Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000. MBBS interns of Lata Mangeshkar Hospital Nagpur and NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences were also protesting against the meager salary of Rs 100 per day.

In May 2022, the Corporation directed the Directorate of Medical Education and Medical Colleges not to charge interns. It also asked the authorities to provide stipend to Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) in front of Indian Medical Graduates in all states and Union Territories.
