A canteen employee at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has been arrested for allegedly video-recording a girls’ hostel bathroom. The entire MMS scam was reported in a report in the Free Press Journal. After this, IIT Mumbai has decided to make several changes in its security procedures. The students have claimed that they have received emails regarding security changes that IIT officials want to make.
After investigation, the authorities of the institute have ascertained all possible issues from the admission to the hostel. The students have claimed that the number of male staff in campus messes and hostels will also be reduced and the night canteens will be closed till only women staff are appointed.
A spokesperson for the organization had earlier said, “The canteen will reopen as it has only women employees.” Immediate steps have been taken in terms of security. Security audit of other girls hostels will also be done.
A student noticed a mobile phone on the window outside the bathroom of the IIT Mumbai women’s hostel on Sunday and immediately informed the authorities. After this, information was given to Powai police station and as soon as the information about the incident was received, the police team immediately reached the spot.
Meanwhile, the police questioned at least five canteen staff and after preliminary investigation, the police identified a 22-year-old canteen employee as the prime suspect and later arrested him.
After the incident, IIT Mumbai issued a statement saying that an attempt was made to breach the privacy of the students in the hostel. The violation was committed by an employee of the Night Canteen, who was caught red handed by the alertness of the students. Meanwhile, the accused has been handed over to the police.
